Heat Pumps

At Horwood Ltd we have invested a great deal of time, money, and effort to become a manufacturer approved installation company. This means that we are recognised as an approved installer for Air Source Heat Pumps and ensures that you will be able to take advantage of any government grant scheme.

An Air Source Heat Pump is a renewable technology that the government are actively pushing consumers to consider. This is evident by the fantastic grants that are available of £5,000 to homeowners who meet their set criteria. Once you have met the criteria to claim the grant then we can help you through every step of the process to ensure that your perfect installation is planned, installed, and commissioned to meet the exact requirements for you and your home.

An Air Source Heat Pump is a relatively simple unit, that works on the same principle as a fridge BUT IN REVERSE. What this means is the air from outside is sucked into a unit and is blown over multiple tubes which are filled with a refrigerant. This then allows the refrigerant to warm up and it turns from a liquid form into a gas. The gas will then pass through a compressor and this causes an increase in pressure, which also adds more heat. The compressed hot gas passes into a heat exchanger which will be surrounded by cool water or air, and at this point the refrigerant will transfer it’s heat to the cool water or air which makes it warm. This is then circulated around your home to provide hot water and heating. At this point the refrigerant then condenses back into a cold liquid and the process starts again from the beginning.

Air Source Heat Pump Installation

When installing an air source heat pump, they are commonly located at the back or side of a property, and they do require a fair amount of space around them for air to circulate. Planning permission is not normally required, however if you live in a conservation area or a listed property then it’s likely you will need consent of the local authority.

When considering an air source heat pump, you will need to consider whether your home is well insulated to ensure that the heat generated is retained. With this type of system both under floor heating and radiators with a larger surface area are commonly installed to enable the heat to disperse better. We have compiled a pre survey form which will help us to ascertain whether you meet the criteria for an air source heat pump. Please complete it as accurately as you can and then we will be able to advise you accordingly. (please contact us for a copy of the form)

Providing you meet the criteria for a grant, and once the installation has been booked in, completed and installed we will then fully advise on how the system controls work to ensure you are getting the most out of it. The normal procedure involves running the system for a longer period of time but at a lower temperature then traditional system,

Once the installation is complete, we then issue a commissioning certificate, and your installation will be registered accordingly.

Are Air Source Heat Pumps Efficient?

Air source heat pumps are a fantastic way to help lower your carbon footprint; how much it is lowered by will depend on what you are replacing. If your existing system is oil or coal, then the CO2 you will save is much more than if it’s a natural gas boiler. Whilst a heat pump is efficient it does still require some electricity to run, there are ways of lowering the usage of electricity by incorporating a PV Solar system as part of your installation. However, this is not essential, and can also be added at a later date if required.
